In this manual we explain how to easily and quickly add an email account to Thunderbird.
In this example, we'll use the domain name: www.yourdomainname.nl. Instead, you'll enter your own information.
After starting Thunderbird, click on “File” (top left) and then select “Existing Email Account”.
Next, enter your (screen) name, the email address you created, and the password you assigned.
Also, ensure that “Remember password” is checked. See the screenshot below.
Then click on: “Continue”.
Thunderbird currently attempts to automatically find the correct settings for your email account; however, this often does not work properly. Therefore, select: “Manual configuration”.
You will now see a new screen with a number of settings and input fields.
Additional information about ports and security
To configure your email securely and without errors, we recommend using an encrypted connection. Select the settings below.
Incoming server
Outgoing server
Please ensure that you always use 'mail' before your domain name (without 'www' in front of it). For example: mail.yourdomainname.nl.
Your username is always the same as the email address you created. So in this example, that is: jan@yourdomainname.nl.
Under 'Connection security', preferably choose “SSL/TLS”. If that option is not available, choose “STARTTLS”.
Under 'Authentication', choose “Normal password” for both incoming and outgoing.
See the screenshot below.
Then click on: “Done”.
Sometimes you may see a (red) warning screen, like the screenshot below.
Don't be alarmed, this is completely normal.
In this case, you check the option: “I understand the risks” and then click on “Done”.
Additional note:
If you have followed all the steps correctly and you continue to receive a message that it is not possible to log in to the (mail) server for incoming/outgoing email, then it is very likely that you are using the wrong password for the email account in question.
